The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) calls for stringent security and disciplinary measures to safeguard the well-being after Adventist SHS shooting incidentof students

NASIA CONFIRMS ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING INCIDENT AT ADVENTIST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN KUMASI

The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) has undertaken its initial Investigative Inspection into the firearm incident that occurred at Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Kumasi, on Friday, April 4, 2025.
A 16-year-old male second-year student, was reported to have brought a locally manufactured pistol to school and accidentally discharged it during break time, resulting in a serious eye injury to a female classmate.
The school’s administration swiftly administered first aid at the school’s infirmary, transferred the victim to the Kwadaso SDA Hospital, and subsequently to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further medical treatment. The Suame District Police was immediately contacted and the perpetrator was taken into custody. He was arraigned before the Akropong Juvenile Court on April 7, 2025.

 

KEY FINDINGS OF THE INVESTIGATION

NaSIA’s investigation confirmed the following:
1. The firearm belonged to the student’s father.
2. The incident occurred in the classroom during break hours and was not preceded by any known conflict.
3. Insufficient security, staff-to-student ratio and gaps in access control and external encroachment were noted.
4. The school, in collaboration with its guidance and counselling unit, conducted a trauma-support session for students following the incident.
